Battlefield 3 has combined arms battles through the single player modes, cooperative and multiplayer. It reintroduces several absent from the Bad Company games, including fighter jets, the position and 64-player battles on PC prone elements. To accommodate the lower player count on consoles, the land area is limited to Xbox 360 and PS3, though fly space remains the same.

During an interview with Game Informer, EA said the Commander mode is unlikely to be included, which met with some criticism of the game's features forum.The EA maps set in Paris, Tehran (and other places in Iran) , Sulaymaniyah, New York, Wake Island, Oman, Kuwait and elsewhere in the Persian Gulf. Battlefield 3 's new Battlelog social network, DICE said, would be linked to all the cooperative games, allowing players to try to win friends accounts and track your performance.Participating co-op allows players to accumulate points to unlock additional content that can be used in multiplayer.
