The King of Fighters obu Faitāzu Za Kingu?), Officially abbreviated KOF, is a series of fighting games developed by SNK Playmore (formerly SNK), which began with The King of Fighters '94 in 1994. A new version of KOF 2002, entitled The King of Fighters 2002 Unlimited Match recently released for the PlayStation 2, the February 26, 2009 in Japan. In 2004, SNK produced the first 3D installment of the series, The King of Fighters: Maximum Impact. The game and its sequel, KOF: Maximum Impact 2 and two improved versions, check much of the backstory for characters and settings from the previous games. The producer of the Maximum Impact series, Falcoon, said Maximum Impact games are in a different continuity of the original series of games. [Another game spin-off, The King of Fighters Neowave, was released for the Xbox, PlayStation 2 Arcade in 2005 and 2006. Like KOF '98 and KOF 2002 Neowave has no history and is considered a game of "party sleep".
